Building on the legacy of the parent company, Steely RMI PLC was formally branched out as a distinct Rolling and Melting Industry in 2004, supported by an initial investment of $38 million with a production capacity of 120,000 tons per annum. This strategic move allowed the company to scale operations, modernize its facilities, and meet growing national demand.
Steely RMI PLC proudly made history in 2013 by becoming the first company in Ethiopia to produce wire rod, marking a major milestone in the country’s steel manufacturing industry. In the same year, the company significantly expanded its operations by increasing its melting capacity by 210,000 metric tons per year. Today, Steely RMI PLC operates with a wire rod production capacity of 150,000 metric tons annually and runs two state-of-the-art rolling mill plants with a combined capacity of 620,000 metric tons of reinforcement bars per year. Through continuous investment in technology and capacity expansion, the company plays a vital role in supporting the growing construction and industrial sectors in Ethiopia.
Demonstrating its commitment to diversification, Steely RMI PLC Steel has also established a dedicated packaging plant with annual production of 18 million cartons per year; while simultaneously enhancing its gas capabilities—growing from one oxygen plant to a second and introducing new nitrogen and argon plants; which contribute a total of 382,800 bottles of gas to Ethiopian market.
